Before sifting through the features that will make the Nokia N97 unique, let's start by acknowledging that the N97 has everything the N96 has: HSDPA, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Bluetooth and the growing range of Nokia Ovi content services. It also sports a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a 3.5mm headphone jack conveniently located on the top of the handset.

Now to the juicy bits. The centrepiece of this "multi-sensory" mobile phone is a 3.5-inch touchscreen with 640x360 resolution, or what Nokia describes as nHD - higher res than WQVGA but less than VGA. This is more pixels than the iPhone, but significantly lower than the res of the displays on the HTC Touch HD and the Xperia X1. Hopefully, this results in a better battery life than some of the competition, which will also be helped by the massive 1500mAh battery included with the phone.

The landscape slider form factor isn't new to the Finns, its E90 Communicator featured the same profile and we liked how it was implemented into that phone when we reviewed it in late 2007. It's very difficult to tell from the early images how well designed the QWERTY keyboard is, but our opinion is that a badly designed QWERTY pad is better than the alternatives, particularly on-screen keyboards.

But the big news is its 32GB of internal storage plus microSD memory card expansion. Like megapixels in cameras, storage is fast becoming the defining feature between competing smartphones, and with a possible 48GB of storage the N97 is well ahead of the pack.
